This morning, I listened to Reverend Jen Bailey on the On Being podcast. In the episode, What We Inherit & What We Send, she says,
“It’s okay to just do what we can do while we’re here and enjoy it while we have it.”
She goes on to explore the gift of mortality, and the gift of recognizing that we don’t have to hold up the world alone. We can pass the baton we received from older generations to the ones who will come after us—and they can pass it to the next generation, and so forth.
“I can do what I can do during this time, and at the same time, I can pass on that which came to me as seed, as blossom, and let somebody else plant it and tend to it,” she says.
“It’s okay to not build the whole house. It’s okay to lay a foundation and be satisfied in that.”
It’s easy to forget the bigger picture, to remember that our individual story—and our collective story—is not the beginning or end. We’re simply stewards of this moment in time, and that is all we can be.
