Happy Sunday! Today is my birthday and so I’m writing you from a rose garden, just outside the Los Angeles Natural History Museum.
It’s a gorgeous final summer day and a cool breeze has settled in over the city. I’m even wearing a cardigan for the first time in a few months.
Fall can’t come quick enough, though I’ll also miss the excessive languishing that seemed to have been felt this past summer. I’m guessing that I’m not alone in feeling as if pandemic birthdays are surreal. It’s as if we have aged decades but also not at all.
I’ve always loved birthdays. They feel like turning a page in one’s own story. I like the intimacy, the invitation to reflect on life and how it has and continues to change.
I also love the secrecy of birthdays, how strangers go on about their day while it feels slightly different for you; you pay a bit more attention. But for everyone else, it’s just another Sunday.
