Thank you for sharing, Kayti! The intro really resonated with me as my summer is looking quite different than my past three summers and I'm learning to embrace it, to be in the softness of the midwest summer, even though I'm longing for my tropical island, tiny waves surf sessions with my girlfriends, and the easy access to a body of water. I'm glad to hear all is better with your sister's health and your IVF journey.

Thanks so much, Alexandra. I love that you're embracing the softness of the midwest summer despite nostalgia for home/what you're most familiar with. Thank you for reading xo

Thank you for sharing, Kayti. This brought back a lot of memories from the time my family and I spent at the hospital during my brother's cancer treatment. I don't know how you found the right words to voice everything so beautifully, but thank you for doing so. It's really great to hear about your sister's recovery!

Wishing smoother sails for you and your family!

Thank you for sharing and giving me permission to have a not-so-wonderful summer. It’s been an awful year. It takes tremendous insight to acknowledge and voice memories of challenging times while one is experiencing joy and contentment. I’m sorry for your difficult and somber summer two years ago and am grateful you reposted your story.

This piece is so powerful, and your reflections on the season of unexpected hardship resonate deeply. There’s something profoundly healing in recognizing that even in the midst of struggle, the simple act of paying attention—of feeling each ripple in the water—becomes a kind of salvation. The honesty in sharing your experience, from the rawness of your sister’s diagnosis to the quiet moments by the lake, is deeply moving. It’s a reminder that even the hardest summers, when we think we can't take any more, are still worth noting. I’m so glad to hear your sister is healing and that hope is finding its way back into your life. Thank you for reminding us all to look around and embrace the present, whatever it holds.
